It’s in the little things.
Stripping walls of posters that have hung for years.
Examining belongings, what stays, what goes.
Just items, but memories too.
Like the car that carted four freshmen to church,
Puns all the way to service,
Chuck Norris jokes all the way back,
Until their position in the vehicle was quite precarious.
The one that traveled across country with friends, family,
That took accidental trips to woods, Charlottesville,
The wrong way down one-way streets,
Housed precious solitary moments with God.
Like the books that sit on shelves,
Passed from friend to friend, sister to sister,
Some are gifts, some from people passed,
Filled with notes in intros, old bookmarks, a letter or two.
It’s in the pictures chosen.
What feels like home,
What moments captured
Hold my heart when the road is rough.
The moments that remind me
One last time to stay out past our bedtime,
One last time to breathe in the stillness of a movie,
With dear friends on either side.
Reminders of upcoming events
That I may miss.
Engagements and weddings.
Births…..deaths?
It’s in the meals made, the laughs shared, the hugs given.
One last memory made.
One last moment shared.
One last time together.
Change is inevitable, but I didn’t know
It would come like this.
It would be so sudden.
It would be so….radical.
So this is what it means
To live by faith,
To trust God’s calling,
To go places unimagined.
It feels like –
Heartache,
Wonder,
Purpose.
“Fare forward, you who think that you are voyaging;
You are not those who saw the harbour
Receding, or those who will disembark.
Here between the hither and the farther shore
While time is withdrawn, consider the future
And the past with an equal mind.
At the moment which is not of action or inaction
You can receive this: ‘on whatever sphere of being
The mind of a man may be intent
At the time of death’ – that is the one action
(And the time of death is every moment)
Which shall fructify in the lives of others:
And do not think of the fruit of action.
Fare forward.
You know it’s by Eliot, of course. Love always, braveheart!
